What Is A Touch

"To be without touch is to move through a blurred, deadened world, in which you could lose a leg and not know it, burn your hand without feeling, and lose track of where you stop and the featureless day begins." -Diane Ackerman

Statement:

For this piece I decided to to a small drawing of how the world may be viewed both with and without touch, showing how touch can make us aware of the things around us and ultimately brighten the world in which we live. Without touch, we would be immune to pain, but we would also be unable to feel the warm sun on our skin or the grass under our feet. Without touch, we would walk through life without enjoyment and view the world as a great blur of places, things, and events.

Artist Statement: For this piece, I made wings and a crown represent my identity. Wings represent different things in many different cultures. for Hindus, wings show freedom and intelligence. In Ancient Egypt, they represent protection. In Pre-Colombian Cultures, wings represent regeneration and rising, and in Greece, they are a symbol for travel, dreams, impulse, and understanding. The reason I chose to make wings is because I personally identify with many of these representations. I am intelligent, cherish freedom, protect those I love, rise above others perceptions of me, love to travel and dream, and am very understanding of others situations and opinions. On Longing

"...the nostalgic input of the handmade in a 'plastic world'." -From the book On Longing by Susan Stuart This piano was purchased in 1917 at the state fair in Iowa and was delivered to my great grandmothers house on a horse-drawn carriage. It was recently restored and presented to me as a gift. When I play it or listen to music on it, I always think about how it came to be in my family and it brings nostalgia for the past. When the piano is played, it is like creating something and bringing the music to life. Unlike the music played today through recordings and devices, each time the piano is played, the hammers hitting the strings creates a slightly different sound, making each time you listen to a song on the piano a special and unique experience. The music listened to widely today in our "plastic world" is just a remake of this experience.
